This course requires professionals to look deeply at the attachments, experiences, and cultural influences that make up who they are so that they can build authentic relationships with children, young people, and families – fully appreciating and celebrating the diversity and uniqueness of each individual. It will also look at the different types of bias and how these might affect your day-to-day working.

The main learning objectives of the course are as follows:

  1. To understand practice in relation to equality and diversity
  2. To explore individual and institutionalised values, beliefs, and cultures and examined their influences on how, as practitioners, you will work with children, families, and young people
  3. To know how unconscious bias impacts on practice
  4. To understand the ways in which oppression and discrimination work including the impact on different groups and individuals
  5. To be able to examine equality and diversity issues from various perspectives (e.g. gender, race, disability, sexual orientation, and religion and belief)
